I will help you find the best solution if your bed is too high and poses a danger 

Technically, the first day your cavalier puppy arrives at your home, he/she is ready to sleep with you--I have done it countless times with puppies that I decided to keep. The first week, I would wake up once in the middle of the night as they still have a tiny bladder, and I would put them either outside or on a potty mat/pine pellet tray that I keep in my bedroom. After a week, that puppy would usually sleep through the night. I never bothered to buy A WATER REPELLENT BLANKET, but lots of my puppy families have for peace of mind. As I go to bed very late, the puppy usually falls asleep in the middle of my king-size bed and doesn't wake up until I do in the morning. The secret is to carry that puppy outside in the morning as soon as eyes are open. I bought A LITTLE DOG STAIRCASE that makes it easy for the puppy to get down without risk... Usually, after a month of that routine, the puppy will follow me downstairs and go outside to go potty and get a well-deserved treat and lots of praise.

Some families' bed is too high or their room are not carpeted like mine so they have to come up with a different plan. One easy fix if your bed isn't too high is to get CARPET RUNNERS all around your bed for a safe landing in case your puppy would have the crazy idea to try to fly...

But really if bed too high, you could also get your puppy a bed that you keep in your bedroom and only let your dog on bed when big enough that there is no more danger. Another solution is too install a little pen next to your bed with blankets, potty mats, and toys, so your puppy is safely tucked in and can hear you nearby like when he/she was little and used to sleep in my bedroom in the puppy pen with the other littermates. In that case, I would advise you to get A SNUGGLE PUPPY WITH A HEARTBEAT for comfort.

My answer is, why would you want to do that?

...Yes, I agree some dogs enjoy a little cocoon, but with the door open and in your bedroom (not alone).

For me, a crate is traumatizing and cold and bound to cause crying... I could never let my human son cry when he was a baby, and he ended up sleeping in my bed... all the time LOL; I use the same philosophy for my puppies.

If it's really important to you that your puppy get that cocoon feel, buy a soft cloth AIRPLANE TRAVELING BAG and keep the door open, or I found this CUTE LITTLE HOUSE that I keep in my kitchen and my dogs are constantely playing in there and going in and out, some like Roxane like to fall asleep inside this CUTE 2 LEVEL HOUSE.

What I can tell you is that the only families that call me because at 7 months their puppies are waking them up in the middle of the night, are the families that listened to other people and were guilted into crating them with the door closed. Cavaliers are cavaliers, and there is a reason why you wanted a cavalier and not a working dog: it's because your cavalier is in love with you, and can't stand being away from you--in my home, there is never any extra room on our living room couch, and forget about going to the restroom alone!
